HALIEN

‘H A L I E N’ is the hair gel of the future, a thermochromic hair additive that allows wearers to create, experiment, and change hair color with the power of heat. Using thermochromic and applied heating technologies, ‘H A L I E N’ instantly morphs hair color into a portable science experiment. Made for styling, fashion, performance, fancy dress, work or casual at-home use, and created for use in wigs, headpieces, real, and synthetic hair, ‘H A L I E N’ truly serves as the hair gel of the future. ‘H A L I E N,’ was Benji’s master’s thesis at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts’ Interactive Telecommunications Program.
THE STORY

In the initial stages of the project, extreme research and branstorming was comprised through moodboards, sketches, writting, and visual refrences helped conceptualize the mood and possibilities of the gel.

Furthermore, more brainstorming and visual graphics helped conveptualize possible ways of making the hair change color. Since the gel is triggered by temperature, the use of XBees, Arduino, and lilypad were considered possibilities for heat implementation. Furthermore, more thought was constructed on how to make the gel work on both natural and synthetic hair.

Over the duration of three months Benji wore HALIEN to test every aspect of the product. Furthermore, keeping a weekly journal of experiences and feedback, much revision to improove and redesign. Tests inclued lastability, application techniques, and it’s water resistance.
Finaly, synthetic hair and wigs were also tested for usability and resistence.
The final report presented a detailed description of the product as well as in-depth experiences and feedback by both users and observers. Furthermore, intense research provides target markets and possible areas for promotion of the gel.

The final product was presented at the 2011 Interactive Telecommunications Program Thesis week where Benji presented the hairgel in action. HALIEN is still in production and any questions, press, or inquieries should be sent to Benji at bcanningpereira@gmail.com
